Obituary for Dannie Franklin Hess

Dannie Franklin Hess was born on May 5, 1928 the son of John and Bessie Vance Hess near Buford, Ohio and departed this life on January 2, 2010.  He lived in Buford all of his life.  He was the youngest of four children.  Dannie graduated from Buford High School in 1946 and married Lela Mae Louderback on December 18, 1946.  They just celebrated 63 years together on December 18, 2009.  They have one son Glenn Hess of Buford.     Dannie was proceeded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Floyd & Della Louderback, three sisters; Margene List Ledford, Kathryn Sonner, Beatrice Ludwick and their husbands, niece Jeanie List and nephew John List.  Survivors include his faithful and loving wife Lela Mae Hess, one son Glenn (Joyce) Hess, grandson Brad (Kim) Hess, granddaughter Jana (Jon) Holbrook, two great-grandchildren Bricen and Caden Hess. He is also survived by one brother-in-law Kenneth (Ruth) Louderback, nieces Carol (Phil) Roberts, Rosemary Ludwick Shaffer, nephews Danny (Wanda) Ludwick, Dennis (Sandy) Sonner, two special nieces Darla and Sherry Louderback and many relatives, friends and neighbors who were special to him.     Dannie accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized at a young age at the Buford Church of Christ.  Later he became a member of the Union Church of Christ, where he was faithful to the end of his life.  He loved to sing and did so for more than 15 years with the “Calvary Four Quartet.”  Dannie was inducted into the “Highland County Fair Hall of Fame” in 2006 and in the “Ohio Auctioneers Hall of Fame” in 2008.  He gave of his time to do fair auctions and benefits for years and was willing to lend a hand to help anyone at any time.  He always tried to be fair and honest with people treating them as he would want to be treated.    As a young boy, Dannie wanted to be an auctioneer.  He would go to the livestock auctions in Hillsboro, Ohio with his dad and was always fascinated by the auctioneer. Dannie had farmed all of his life with his dad and decided he wanted to become an auctioneer.   In the summer of 1954, Dannie, his wife Lela Mae and their 5 year old son Glenn left for Decatur, Indiana so Dannie could attend the Reppert School of Auctioneering. He was a shy person (back then) and his dad and mom and many others were very skeptical of this on taking.  Well, Dannie proved them wrong and the business has been going strong for over 56 years now.  He came home and started the business from their home as Dannie Hess and Associates Auctioneers, which later became Hess Auction Company.  Dannie sold real estate for years with Bates & Liming Realtors and in 1983 transferred to Donald E. Fender Inc. Realtors.   Lela Mae cashiered and handled the office work for the business.  His auctions were mostly in southern Ohio but occasionally in Kentucky and other areas.  Dannie was an auctioneer for Producers Livestock Yards in Hillsboro for 20 years and also for the livestock yards in Olive Hill and Maysville Kentucky for several years.  He was pleased to have three generations of the Hess family in the business.    He continued to live on the farm and enjoyed cattle, horses and especially enjoyed grand and great-grand children showing cattle at the fairs and watching the kids play in sports.   He always enjoyed watching Bricen and Caden go by on the school bus and wave at him and having them come over on the mule for a visit.      Dannie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Uncle, friend and special to all who knew him.  He loved people and would talk to anyone who wanted to talk.  It wasn’t uncommon to see him sitting at his desk calling friends and family asking them “How are you feeling?,” “Do you need anything?,” “ How was your day?,” “ How was the sale?,” “ How are the crops” and “Is there anything I can do for you?”     Thank you to all who have helped in this time, especially Clermont Mercy Hospital Doctors, Nurses and staff for their superb care and kindness.  Crossroad Hospice, Edgington Funeral Home, Andrew Johnson and Hugh Hurley for their kind words, Cindy Michael, Kathy Holbrook and Cindy Bloom for the music.  All who have called, visited, brought food, prayers and helped in any way during Dannie's illness and death.  It has been greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME TO THE VISITATION AND OR THE FUNERAL.  The Hess Family
